Privacy Policy for Habitat AI
Last Updated: December 5, 2025
We Actually Care About Your Privacy (No, Really)
At Habitat AI, we believe your data is like your home – it should be secure, private, and nobody should be snooping around in it without permission. This privacy policy explains how we handle your information when you use our mobile app.
Getting Started: We Need to Know Who You Are
To use Habitat AI, you'll need to create an account. We know, we know – another username and password to remember. But we promise it's worth it, and we need to know who you are to provide you with personalized habitat experiences.
When We Get to Know Each Other
Sometimes we'll need to get acquainted, such as when you:
- Create an account with Habitat AI
- Set up your personalized habitat preferences
- Contact our support team (they're lovely people, by the way)
- Enable location-based features for your local habitat recommendations
We collect this information thoughtfully and store it securely – think of it as keeping your data in a well-organized, locked filing cabinet, not scattered on a messy desk.
Your Data Stays in Our House (Mostly)
Habitat AI does not sell, rent, or trade your personal information. Period. Your data won't end up in some sketchy data bazaar.
The Technical Exception:
We use essential third-party service providers for analytics, app performance monitoring, and infrastructure (like cloud storage and crash reporting). These services help us understand usage patterns, fix bugs, and keep the app running smoothly. Think of them as our trusted mechanics and maintenance crew – they help keep everything running, but don't get to take your data for a joyride.
These service providers only receive the technical information necessary to perform their specific functions, and they're contractually obligated to protect your data.
Other than these essential service providers, we don't share your information with other organizations, partners, or that guy who keeps asking.
If you opt-in to our community features, some basic profile information may be visible to other Habitat AI users within the app.
The Technical Stuff We Track
We use analytics and monitoring tools to understand how Habitat AI is performing and how we can make it better. This includes:
- App crashes (we hope there aren't any, but we're realistic)
- Feature usage patterns
- General geographic regions (country/state level, not your exact couch coordinates)
- Device information (phone model, OS version – the boring technical stuff)
These statistics help us improve the app but don't track your individual personal details. Our third-party service providers process this data according to their respective privacy policies and data protection standards.
Push Notifications: We Won't Be That App
If you enable push notifications, we promise not to be that annoying app that buzzes you at 3 AM about nothing important. We'll only send relevant updates about your habitats and features you've expressed interest in.
Your Security is Our Priority
We use industry-standard encryption to protect your data. Think of it as a really good lock on your digital door – not the flimsy kind that breaks when you sneeze near it.
Third-Party Links: Venture at Your Own Risk
Our app may contain links to external websites or services. Once you leave Habitat AI, you're in the wild – we can't control what happens out there. We encourage you to read their privacy policies (though we know ours is more fun to read).
Your Content, Your Rights (With Some Fine Print)
You Own Your Content: Any documents, PDFs, notes, or other content you upload to Habitat AI remains yours. We don't claim ownership of your materials.
License to Process Your Content: However, to provide our services (summaries, flashcards, recommendations, collaboration features), you grant Habitat AI a non-exclusive, worldwide, revocable license to:
- Host, store, and cache your uploaded content
- Process and analyze content with AI to generate summaries, flashcards, and insights
- Transform and display your content within the app features you use
- Maintain and improve service quality (debugging, performance tuning)
Your Responsibility:
By uploading or importing content, you confirm that you have all necessary rights to that material. You're responsible for ensuring you don't upload:
- Content that infringes on copyright, trademark, or other intellectual property rights
- Confidential information you're not authorized to share
- Pirated books, paywalled articles, or illegally obtained materials
Third-Party Content: When you request processing of web pages, arXiv papers, blog posts, or other online content, you're responsible for ensuring you have permission to process that material. Our summaries are tools to help you understand content, not substitutes for accessing the original works or respecting their licenses.
How AI Works With Your Content
Habitat AI uses artificial intelligence (both our own systems and third-party AI providers) to analyze your content and generate summaries, flashcards, and recommendations.
What This Means:
- Your uploaded content is processed by AI models to extract key information and generate insights
- We may use third-party AI service providers (who act as data processors under strict agreements)
- AI outputs may contain errors, incomplete interpretations, or inaccuracies
- We may use automated systems to detect abuse (e.g., systematic uploading of pirated content) and throttle or block such use
Important Disclaimer:
AI-generated summaries, flashcards, and recommendations are informational tools only. They should NOT be treated as:
- Legal, financial, medical, or professional advice
- Authoritative or definitive interpretations of source materials
- Substitutes for reading and verifying original sources
- Academically citable without consulting the original works
You remain responsible for verifying information and consulting original materials for accurate citations and critical decisions.
Copyright Complaints & Takedown Procedure
We respect intellectual property rights and comply with applicable copyright laws, including the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) in the United States.
If you believe content in Habitat AI infringes your copyright:
- Send a written notice to our designated copyright agent at: chimp@habitatai.app
- Include in your notice:
- Identification of the copyrighted work claimed to be infringed
- Identification of the material that is claimed to be infringing and information reasonably sufficient to permit us to locate it
- Your contact information (address, telephone number, email)
- A statement that you have a good faith belief that use of the material is not authorized
- A statement that the information in the notification is accurate and, under penalty of perjury, that you are authorized to act on behalf of the copyright owner
- Your physical or electronic signature
What Happens Next:
- We will promptly investigate valid copyright notices
- If we determine content is infringing, we will remove or disable access to it
- We will notify the user who uploaded or requested the content
- Users who repeatedly infringe copyright may have their accounts suspended or terminated
Data Retention: What We Keep and For How Long
We keep different types of data for different periods, always balancing service quality with your privacy:
- Uploaded Documents: Stored as long as your account is active or until you delete them
- Generated Summaries & Flashcards: Retained as long as the source document remains or until you delete them
- Web-Fetched Content: Cached temporarily (typically 30-90 days) unless saved to your library
- Account Information: Retained while your account is active and for a short period after deletion as required by law
- Analytics & Technical Logs: Typically retained for 12-24 months for service improvement and security
When You Delete Content or Your Account:
- Deleted items are immediately removed from active systems and your view
- Content may persist in encrypted backups for up to 90 days (backups are not used for AI training or active features)
- Some anonymized analytics data may be retained longer for service improvement
- We may retain certain records as required by law (e.g., for accounting, dispute resolution)
Your Data Rights: Depending on your location, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, port, or restrict processing of your personal data. Contact us at crew@habitatai.app to exercise these rights.
Legal Disclaimer & Scope of Service
No Professional Advice: Habitat AI provides AI-powered summarization and learning tools. Our service does not provide legal, financial, medical, academic, or other professional advice. Any summaries, insights, or recommendations are for informational and educational purposes only.
No Endorsement: The availability of a summary or processing of content does not constitute our endorsement, verification, or guarantee of accuracy of the underlying materials.
Limitation of Liability: To the extent permitted by law, Habitat AI is not liable for losses arising from reliance on summaries instead of original source materials, or from errors or omissions in AI-generated content. You agree to verify important information and consult original sources.
Intended Use: Habitat AI is designed for use with your own content, openly licensed materials (like arXiv), internal documents you're authorized to process, and publicly accessible web content where you have legitimate reason to create summaries for personal learning or research.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this privacy policy occasionally (we promise not to do it just for fun). When we make significant changes, we'll notify you through the app or via email if you've provided one.
